ACTION ALERT – VA - NAIS AND HOME KITCHEN BILLS
"No funds derived from any source shall be used to implement, develop, maintain, enforce, or support any mandatory provisions of the program identified by the United States Department of Agriculture as the "National Identification System."
This Budget Line Amendment goes to vote in House Appropriations Subcommittee #3 on Thursday, January 7.

ACTION: Please call the members of the subcommittee and ask them to SUPPORT this budget line amendment that prohibits funding for a mandatory National Animal Identification System in Virginia (it is Item 102 #1h, inserted on page 82 after line 2--for more information see below).

SB272, Sen. Creigh Deeds' Home Kitchen exemption bill, has passed the Senate Ag Committee UNCONTESTED!!!!!!! Goes next to full Senate where we expect it to pass (bill provides exemption from inspections for home kitchens for direct final sales of specific foods--see link for details).

Page 82, after line 2, insert:
"No funds derived from any source shall be used to implement, develop, maintain,
enforce, or support any mandatory provisions of the program identified by the United
States Department of Agriculture as the "National Animal Identification System."
Explanation:
(This amendment prohibits the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services
from expending funds to implement or participate in any mandatory provisions of the
USDA's National Identification System for livestock. It is intended to allow for
voluntary participation in the program by farmers and producers.)
