Finding a Support System

There are many different emotions and feelings that we all go through after the loss of a loved one. This is especially true for those of us who have lost a loved one or a family member to addiction. Having a support group during this difficult time is essential.

Family and friends are very valuable. However, unless they have lost a loved one to drug or alcohol abuse, it’s very likely that they won’t fully understand what you are going through. You need to find the support of other people who have been through what you are going through now so that you can see that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. So that you can know that you will survive this, even when you feel like you won’t.

The loss of a loved one is something you never really get over. Particularly when you have lost a loved one due to substance abuse. There is a specific pain that comes along with a loss of this type, and it is something that will never leave you. However, you can learn to live with the pain. Having a support group is essential when you are learning how to develop those coping skills.

It’s very important to have a place where you can be open and honest among people who have experienced what you are experiencing. If you are currently suffering and you live in the Fort Collins area, I highly encourage you to come to one of our meetings.
